Performing Arts

The aim of the Performing Arts department is to provide extra-curricular opportunities for all students with a keen interest in theatre and performance, be it acting, singing, dancing, music, writing, set design, sound and lighting or backstage work. The scope, size and variety of the school’s productions is increasing all the time, with performance events including musicals, straight acting and comedy plays, music concerts and the House Music and Drama events.

There is currently a Junior Drama Group and a Senior Drama Group, both of which provide individual acting opportunities for students throughout the school, as well as bringing both groups together to perform in a main production at the end of the Christmas term. In the past few years, students in both drama groups have enjoyed exposure on local BBC radio and the Citizen newspaper, as well as a week’s run of performances at the Picturedrome Theatre in Gloucester.

In the last year, the Performing Arts department has received a substantial amount of investment by the Parents Association into its facilities, vastly increasing the school’s ability to produce performances that are as professional as possible. This investment has included a brand new 15 channel sound system with feedback monitors for live music performances, two brand new front of house lighting bars with 18 new stage lights in School Hall, a state of the art backstage communication system, as well as new backing flats and props for set construction. We have also seen the completion of a brand new drama studio that will be used for performances from September 2014.

The Performing Arts department consists of a number of dedicated teaching staff who regularly volunteer their time in order to help ensure and increase the number of good quality performance opportunities for the pupils of Sir Thomas Rich’s School.
