Blue Coat Best Book at Sir Thomas Rich's School

The Blue Coat Best Book Award provides an opportunity for our students to read beyond their comfort zone genres. Our 2015 winner was Robert Muchamore’s Rock War, which has also been voted as the STRS nomination for the new county-wide award, promoted by Library Services for Education, the Gloucestershire Secondary Schools’ Book Award.

In the autumn term, Ms Cordall, the LRC Manager (Librarian) and Ms Sadler from the English Department, draw up a long list of around 20 titles: a mix of newly published books across the genres and reading levels, plus a classic, literary fiction title (this year it is 1984 by George Orwell). A team of year 9 students read through them and recommend a short list of 8 to 10 books. We then buy multiple copies of the shortlisted books. These will go forward for a group of year 8 students to read, discuss and promote to their peers, by writing reviews (available online), presentations and speed bookselling events during Reading Lessons. All students may vote for their favourite and the winner is announced in June.

Some of the 2015 to 2016 long list have also appeared on the Carnegie Medal 2016 long list – it will be interesting to see whether any of our chosen books end up on the Carnegie short list too.
