Sir Thomas Rich’s has an excellent reputation for its sporting achievements and the School also takes great pride in offering a broad range of sporting opportunities for all pupils, whatever their aptitudes and abilities.
The facilities for sport at Tommies are very good and a knowledgeable and enthusiastic coaching team work tirelessly with pupils to ensure that they enjoy their sport and fulfil their potential.
Pupils frequently continue their sporting activities into adult life and many Old Richian’s have gained national honours and international tournament experience in their chosen sports, some even before they leave the School.
As well as the obvious benefits for health and wellbeing, the School’s emphasis on sport is recognised by many employers and university admission tutors as creating team players who display determination, enthusiasm and commitment – essential life skills for a successful future.
Sport fills a prominent role in the life of all Richians and boys are given the opportunity to excel in a variety of sports or simply participate in a range of activities at a level that suits their needs and ability.
Tommies is rare in that it still provides boys with the opportunity to take part in a structured games programme on different afternoons during the week. In addition there is a full programme of fixtures organised midweek and for every Saturday.

The School rugby club is among the strongest in the county; the School fields ten sides on a regular basis and while rugby is the main focus throughout the term we recognise that not all boys are suited to the sport and we therefore provide opportunities for boys to pursue activities such as badminton, cross-country and swimming.
The main boys' sports are rugby sevens, football and cross-country running although there is a much wider range of sports available and regular fixtures are also organised in basketball, netball, badminton, hockey and table tennis.
The main boys' team sport is cricket and the School fields seventeen sides on a regular basis. In addition the School competes regularly at athletics, and tennis, experiencing recent success in all areas.
