Sir Thomas Rich’s has an excellent reputation for its sporting
achievements and the School also takes great pride in offering a broad
range of sporting opportunities for all pupils, whatever their aptitudes
The facilities for sport at Tommies are very good and a knowledgeable
and enthusiastic coaching team work tirelessly with pupils to ensure
that they enjoy their sport and fulfil their potential.
Pupils frequently continue their sporting activities into adult life
and many Old Richian’s have gained national honours and international
tournament experience in their chosen sports, some even before they
leave the School.
As well as the obvious benefits for health and wellbeing, the
School’s emphasis on sport is recognised by many employers and
university admission tutors as creating team players who display
determination, enthusiasm and commitment – essential life skills for a
Sport fills a prominent role in the life of all Richians and boys are
given the opportunity to excel in a variety of sports or simply
participate in a range of activities at a level that suits their needs
Tommies is rare in that it still provides boys with the opportunity
to take part in a structured games programme on different afternoons
during the week. In addition there is a full programme of fixtures
organised midweek and for every Saturday.

As well as the main team sport of Rugby, other major sports include
Cross Country and Football. The School rugby club is among the strongest
in the county; the School fields ten sides on a regular basis and while
rugby is the main focus throughout the term we recognise that not all
boys are suited to the sport and we therefore provide opportunities for
boys to pursue activities such as badminton, cross-country and swimming.
The main boys' sports are rugby sevens, football and cross-country
running although there is a much wider range of sports available and
regular fixtures are also organised in basketball, netball, badminton,
hockey and table tennis.
The main boys' team sport is cricket and the School fields seventeen
sides on a regular basis. In addition the School competes regularly at
athletics, and tennis, experiencing recent success in all areas.
