Advice for Prospective Lawyers

Steve Webley from the University of Birmingham Law School visited us on July 16th to advise potential undergraduates in Law. Steve explained that a successful law student needed to be a voracious reader and have the ability to argue a persuasive case, both orally and in writing. He added that those wishing to enter the legal profession need not read a Law degree, they may choose an alternative subject and then undertake a Law Conversion Course or Graduate Diploma. When visiting universities, Steve advised students to ask pertinent questions about the size of tutorial groups and the extent of careers advice. At Birmingham, tutorial groups usually consist of about 10 students, which provide every opportunity for student engagement. Furthermore, careers input is multi-faceted and includes a Law Fair, internship opportunities and Law in Practice seminars. Mind you, not all Law graduates enter the legal profession; nationally the figure is 50%, at Birmingham it is 2/3rds. In summary, this was a most informative talk, presented by an expert in the field.
