Drama
Drama is a creative, dynamic and expressive subject at Sir Thomas Rich’s, rooted in academic inquiry and striving to push the boundaries of established orthodoxies. Students work in groups and as individuals to develop their core knowledge and understanding of the subject, guided by expert teachers who seek to inspire a high level of independent thinking and intellectual curiosity.
The study of Drama promotes confidence, team working, leadership and communication skills in students, who are encouraged to reflect on and critically analyse their own work and that of others in a safe and supportive environment.
Key Stage 3
Students are taught for one period of Drama every week in mixed ability groups, with weekly homework comprising written and/or practical tasks based on learning in the classroom. Pupils are regularly assessed and teachers ensure they gain a full understanding of why they are at their level and exactly what they need to do to improve.

Key Stage 4
Students in Years 10 and 11 follow the WJEC Eduqas GCSE Specification and are taught for five periods over two weeks, with weekly homework tasks. Component 1 of the GCSE, Devising Theatre, forms 40% of the overall marks and students participate in the creation, development and performance of a piece of devised theatre using either the techniques of an influential theatre practitioner or a genre, in response to a stimulus set by WJEC. In Component 2, Performance from a Text, pupils are assessed on acting and study two extracts from a performance text, then take part in one performance using sections of the performance text. Component 3, Interpreting Theatre comprises a series of questions on one set text, a live theatre review and an analysis of a given aspect of a live theatre production seen during the course.

Enrichment
There are many opportunities for students to take part in and enjoy drama productions, regardless of whether they choose to study the subjects at GCSE and A Level. Past whole school productions have included School of Rock, variety shows, Julius Caesar and Our Day Out, many of which have been produced in close collaboration with the Music Department. There are Key Stage plays, theatre trips and many opportunities to watch performances by visiting theatre companies and live streamed performances. For those students keen to take specialist performing arts qualifications, LAMDA exams and qualifications are provided by external Drama tutor (at additional cost).
