The Under 14 squad have dominated their side of the rugby county cup draw this season. They first faced Marling School in the second round, beating them 32-5.They then defeated previous cup finalists, Dean Magna in the quarter final 35-0. The next game saw STRS face St Peter's High School in a highly anticipated semi-final clash. This was history repeating itself as the previous STRS cup winners had found themselves in the same situation in their cup run in 2017.
STRS scored almost immediately from the kick off with a converted try under the posts from the powerful winger Emanuel Chuckwemeka. There was much back and forth action before Morgan Keene dived over the line from a ruck on the St Peters 5 meter line. St Peters answered with 2 converted tries of their own, leaving the score at 14 all by half time.
After the break STRS seemed to move into a higher gear and outworked their opponents in open play. The forwards carried the ball hard into the contact area. Notably the second row Wilf Bond managed to get over the gain line many times, drawing in multiple defenders. This eventually resulted in a second try from Chuckwemeka.
St Peter’s mounted some aggressive counter attacks, however the STRS defensive line held firm. The third try came from a very well executed driving maul off a line out. Back row Michael Nixon dropped over the line to secure the points.
The game continued to be competitive as St Peter’s worked hard to pressure the STRS team. However, after a skilful attack from the omnipresent STRS centre Sonjal Rai, captain Finlay Gwilliam managed to create a 2 v 1 situation to set up Chuckwemeka for his hat trick before the final whistle.
The final score finished at 36-14, STRS will now defend their county cup championship title against Archway school at Kingsholm on the 2nd of May 2018.
