Talk on University Personal Statements

On Tuesday, 8th July, Barrie Clark, Schools’ Liaison Officer at Swansea University visited us to speak to Year 12 students on the subject of the UCAS personal statement. Barrie gave a highly informative and very funny talk, which was well-received by students. He made clear the need to open the statement in an attention grabbing way and stressed the virtues of the ABC approach. Hence, a student should outline the relevant activity they have been involved in, follow this with an explanation of the benefit it yielded and finish with a statement of how it connects with the course they wish to study. Barrie continued with some advice on the use of humour in a statement, in short, tread with caution in this regard. Students can be certain that if they act on Barrie’s very good advice they can produce “47 lines of glory” which will greatly enhance their university application.
