Rich’s students have enjoyed tremendous success in United Kingdom Mathematics Trust Maths Challenge competitions this year: with Ed Hart in Year 9 notably achieving gold competing against top students from around the UK in a round usually designed for top Year 12 and 13 students! During the initial lockdown over 220 of our students showed excellent commitment to their studies when they chose to take part in the UKMT Junior Maths Challenge online from home; the majority of our students gained awards (winners in Years 7 and 8 pictured here also).
Earlier in 2020 students entered the Intermediate Maths Challenge, for students in Years 7-11. Five of our Year 10 pupils qualified for the follow-on competition, the Pink Kangaroo, with Savinu Weerasekera from Year 11 achieving a Distinction. Ed Hart (then in Year 8) also took part, scoring full marks and qualifying for the highest ranking follow-on competition, the Cayley Olympiad. This is a two-hour paper with six questions, where students have to submit full solutions to problems. Ed scored an impressive 52 out of 60, resulting in a distinction. Under normal circumstances this would have placed him in the top 50 students in the UK!
More recently the Senior Maths Challenge took place, which we generally offer to our top mathematicians in Year 12 and Year 13. All students who entered gained an award, while one – Ed Hart - qualified for the Senior Kangaroo competition. Competing against the top students of school age in the country, Ed gained a gold award, scoring an impressive 95 marks.
We are of course extremely proud of all the students who have participated in the competitions this year, but special mention goes to Ed Hart. He embodies a true Richian spirit in his approach to his Mathematics, displaying passion and pride.
