Art students at Sir Thomas Rich’s explore concepts and techniques in a creative environment, while working within a structured framework of teaching and learning. Pupils develop high levels of core knowledge and understanding in Art, encouraging them to think for themselves and to increase self-discipline and resilience.

Learners explore a range of media and processes and create their own works of art, studying established and lesser known artists and designers in depth to inform their own creative practice. Pupils are inspired to think critically about the historical and cultural development of Art and to challenge established orthodoxies as they investigate cultures, periods, styles and movements from the ancient world to the present day.

Pupils in Years 7, 8 and 9 are taught Art for one period a week and homework is set either on a weekly or fortnight basis, depending on the task. Assessment is by an end of year exam in the summer term. Students are encouraged to develop their creativity and technical ability, developing their practical skills in drawing, painting, printmaking and sculpture. Learners study works by artists, photographers, designers and sculptors, providing inspiration for creating their own artworks and allowing for reflection and critical thinking.

Pupils study the AQA Specification for GCSE Art and Design over five lessons a fortnight, with homework set on a weekly basis. A 10-hour exam is sat at the end of Year 11. Students who opt for GCSE Art follow the AQA Art, Craft and Design syllabus. This involves producing at least two projects for their portfolio for Component 1, which is 60% of the GCSE marks, plus an externally set assignment for Component 2, which comprises 40% of GCSE marks. We also offer AQA GCSE Photography, 60%/40%.

Pupils study the AQA A Level Art and Design A Level Specification over ten lessons a fortnight. This involves producing at least two projects for their personal investigation, Component 1, 60% of A Level, plus an externally set assignment, Component 2, 40% of A Level. Weekly homework is set and the course concludes with a 15-hour exam at the end of Year 13.

An open-door policy operates in the Art rooms at lunchtime, and students in all year groups are free to develop their creative practice with input from specialist teachers. There is also a popular Photography Club, and regular exhibitions of pupils’ work. A Level students attend a residential trip, and there are trips to the Tate Modern and leading galleries and exhibitions locally and further afield which support learning in the classroom.
