Christmas Science Lectures

Christmas Science Lectures

Some of our Year 8 pupils recently attended the annual Science Christmas Lectures at the Bacon Theatre, Dean Close School, organised by the Honourable Company of Gloucestershire. The lectures are designed along similar lines to the Royal Institution’s annual lectures and aim to enthuse, excite and encourage Key Stage 3 students about STEM subjects. There were two presentations, and one of our pupils, Bryson, even had the opportunity to go up on stage and take part in the experiments:

Am I Normal? was an interactive stage show exploring what it really means to be ‘normal’, and whether such a thing exists at all. The presentation began by investigating the history of normality before diving into statistics, genetics, evolution and brain plasticity.

Explosive Foods encouraged students to see food in a whole new light, revealing the incredible amount of energy contained in what we eat. Packed with exciting chemistry and physics demonstrations, the show featured everything from fountains of fizzy cola to some rather gruesome insights into what goes on in the digestive system!
