The Girls’ Football Team travelled to Chosen Hill School on Wednesday and played their first ever match – winning 2-1! Coach Mr Ormston reports: “After months of training and anticipation, the girls were excited and nervous, but as soon as the game got going, they showed skill, discipline and great determination. The Rich’s side played a free flowing attacking style and, under the guidance of Team Captain Querene, laid siege to the Chosen Hill goal. However, their opponents were an impressive defensive force, so opportunities to open the scoring were quickly blocked, deflected and scrambled away. The STRS side piled on the pressure and it seemed only a matter of time before the first goal came. After 30 minutes of attack and defence negating each other, our side got the breakthrough their play deserved. After a flurry of shots and blocks, attacking midfielder and Vice-Captain Holly Smith picked up the ball just outside the penalty area and shifted to shoot, placing the ball expertly in the bottom corner of the Chosen Hill net from 12 yards out. STRS 1-0 Chosen Hill. After taking the lead, the side’s confidence was up so the attacks became more intense and the pressure on the Chosen Hill goal increased. A second goal followed shortly after – a nice run and cross into the box from Bea – and Eva was first to react to put the ball away expertly. STRS 2-0 Chosen Hill. The team settled on their lead and defended superbly against a now resurgent Chosen Hill, who were determined to get back into the game. The STRS defence rebuffed all efforts until a late, well struck and unstoppable shot into the STRS top corner that gave the reliable goalkeeper Honor no chance and reduced the visitors lead to 2-1. Our defence reacted well to this disappointment, tightening their grip on the game to prevent further breaches and, showing no mercy, kept the opponents at bay to secure the victory. A great performance from the whole squad and a fantastic team effort!”
