The House Music Competition took place on Monday this week, and the judges and audience members all agreed that the standard was exceptionally high this year. In the morning, the Junior and Senior Soloists competed, with all performers displaying an incredible level of skill. The judges had a hard time deciding on the winner, and it was very close, but in the end Leon B from 10B won the Junior Soloist round for Westgate with his wonderful rendition of Piano Tarantella in A Minor by Albert Pieczonka. In the Senior competition, Taishi F from 12R played the Chopin’s Revolutionary Étude for piano beautifully to take the top spot, also for Westgate.

Going into the Open Round in the afternoon, there were spirited performances from all involved as pupils from across the year groups joined together to form five House supergroups to play for the judges and the 7B and 8S audience. Newgate performed Stop Your Messing Around by The Specials, followed by Westgate with Don’t Stop Believing by Journey, then Northgate with From the Start by Laufey. Eastgate took to the stage next with Blur’s Song No2, and finally Southgate closed the competition with a storming Mr Brightside by The Killers.

The judges then deliberated and totted up the scores from all the rounds, with Westgate eventually being declared overall winner by just two points, and taking the coveted House silverware. A special mention goes to Newgate, who won the Open Round with some fantastic vocals and musicality on show, performing Stop Your Messing Around.
