Pupils Cook Up a Storm at Open Evening!

Pupils cooked up a storm in our well-equipped Food Tech building on Open Evening last week! Brothers Dion and Eron (Years 7 and 9 respectively), along with Harry, Oscar and Tristan (Year 9), gave up their free time to demonstrate our fantastic facilities to parents and prospective pupils. Their dishes included vegetarian and meat burgers, brownies, bread rolls and a winter salad featuring feta, roasted fine beans, chickpeas and peppers.
Food Technology is an important part of the Design and Technology curriculum in Years 7 to 9. Pupils develop practical cooking skills while learning about food hygiene, kitchen safety, nutrition and healthy eating. They explore ingredients, cooking methods and food preparation techniques, building their confidence and independence in the kitchen. These skills help pupils make informed choices about food and develop knowledge they can use in everyday life.
Pupils also have plenty of opportunities to put their skills into practice beyond their timetabled lessons; the Pop-Up Café, hosted in FoodTech on Monday lunchtimes and Wednesday break, gives pupils the opportunity to get involved in preparing and serving food, with proceeds donated to selected charities. Of course, the café is open to all – with lots of healthy options and pocket money prices!
Lunchtime cooking workshops also offer pupils the chance to develop their practical skills, try new recipes and build confidence in the kitchen.
