In a back and forth, high paced, physical game the under 14 Rugby team beat local rivals St Peter's High School 22-14 in the EDF Cup semi-final. After two quick try's from STRS second row Dan Tilley and number eight Mitchell Chuckwuemeka, St Peter's camped on the STRS five meter line for a good part of the first half. St Peter's played phase after phase of short attacks from the breakdown but could not get past the effective STRS defensive line. Eventually, after sending the ball wide and scoring in the corner St Peter's managed to narrow the lead. The first half finished 10-7 to STRS.
At the start of the second half, St Peter's had the chance to equalize with a penalty in front off the posts. However, the ball hit the upright. STRS player Owen Morris caught the ball and the forwards counter attacked quickly. With the wind at their backs, STRS did a good job of pinning St Peter's back in their own 22 with some effective clearances from full back Gabriel Knight and scrum half Jed Dodds. The forwards utilised the driving maul well, nearly scoring on a number of occasions from the line out. STRS were next to score with inside centre Jamie Parmar cutting through the defence to score under the posts. Gabriel Knight then kicked the conversion. St Peter's retaliated with a converted try of their own. This despite some ferocious tackling and counter rucking from the home side. With less than ten minutes to go the score was a narrow 17-14 to STRS.
It was now Tommies turn to camp on the St Peter's five meter line. The STRS players put tremendous pressure onto the defending team, who despite their best efforts couldn't manage to clear their own lines. Eventually Max Marshall powered over the line to close the game 22-14 to the blue and gold players of STRS.
The boys will be playing Katharine Lady Berkeley's school in the EDF Cup final at Kingsholm Stadium on Wednesday the 26th of April. Kick off times are yet to be confirmed, parents are encouraged to come and support the team on the day.
