Earlier in the year, 46 pupils visited the United Nations building in New York. During the tour they were joined by former pupil Joe Gyte, who talked with pupils about his life journey from studying at Rich’s to working with the UN in New York.
Joe left Sir Thomas Rich’s in 2008 and completed a Psychology degree at Cardiff University. After university he worked in several short-term jobs before deciding to travel SE Asia. During this time, a chance meeting with an NGO representative in Thailand led to Joe working in southern Thailand, where he developed expertise in supporting victims of violence and torture as well as the rehabilitation of violent extremists. Joe felt it was important to tell pupils that life-changing opportunities can surprise you, but encouraged pupils to take-up any that arise.
Joe spoke further about how he completed his postgraduate research into Thailand’s deep south insurgency remotely through St Andrews University. His work and research publications in this field led to him being employed initially by the UN in Thailand, the EU in Brussels, and later the UN in New York. Joe now works independently for the UN as a consultant on terrorism prevention and rehabilitation and reintegration.
*“Mr Gyte is a well-informed and enthusiastic Old Richian. He had interesting perspectives and an insight into the work that the UN does, allowing students to ask questions about many facets of the organisation. The information he provided was thought provoking and in-depth, and he clearly has a passion for his humanitarian work. His presence and willingness to answer student questions was certainly an addition to the trip”. Alex, Year 12.
